Man on fire
06/24/2010

VETERAN artiste Engelbert Humperdinck not only sings but is a comedian as well. And his sense of humour had the crowd roaring at his 2010 Legacy of Love World Tour concert at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, last Friday night.

"I have been in this business for three years … no it’s 43 years," he said. "And people say after 43 years, he still looks so young … just joking … but it’s true!"You may not be familiar with many of his ‘old’ hits but the moment he started singing them, the songs all came rushing back.

And if you think that after 43 years, the fire is on the wane, then you’d be dead wrong. Humperdinck was a powerhouse of energy, wit and fun and a whizz at interacting with his audience that night.

He displayed some smooth and sexy moves as well, all of which to prove that he was mighty proud of the fact that he had lost weight.

"I used to look like I was pregnant. Now ..," he said, turning around and strutting his stuff, "I’m proud of it!"
He certainly looked good for his age (he’s 74!) and although all the prancing and shaking left him panting a little and all sweaty, he still found the strength to take digs at himself and others, insisting that the ladies were flirting with him as they made their way to the restrooms.

At one point, he invited a woman from the audience up on stage and kept asking if she was shy. We found out why.

He had her sit down and hold up a lyric card so he could serenade her. Then half way through, he snatched the card away and leaped onto her lap, hugging her tight and kissing her!

The crowd went wild and still he had not finished. Upon completing the song, he had the woman wiped his sweaty chest with a handkerchief and then tied it around her neck as a souvenir.

There just seemed to be no end to Humperdinck’s antics. From the moment go, he had them eating out of his hand. His jokes – both naughty and nice – kept them hugging their sides with laughter and, despite being drowned out at times by his band, his singing had them mesmerised.

He took the audience down memory lane with Can’t Take My Eyes off You, Am I That Easy to Forget, Man without Love, I’m on Fire, Quando, Spanish Eyes, There Goes My Everything, Sweetheart and, of course, the song that shot him to fame, Release Me, among others.

Then, to provide his fans with more memories, he presented his new single, Tell Me Where It Hurts, which will be released in two weeks.

But it was still his old hits that had the crowd cheering, clapping and singing along. He was so enamoured by their response that he kept trying to say "terima kasih" and kept tripping up, finally managing it after several attempts but his attempts helped endear him to his fans.

The man was so caught up with the moment that after his final song, he exited the stage and reappeared without waiting for cries of encore to start up.

"I was going to come back out anyway," he said, and launched into his final two numbers – We’ll Meet Again and My Way.

And as he made his way along the stage to say his thank yous and goodbyes, someone draped a red robe around him and he started prancing around like a boxer who had just won a fight.

Well, he definitely won everyone over that night, and more.

The Engelbert Humperdinck 2010 Legacy of Love World Tour was presented by Resorts World Genting.
