Humperdinck reflects on Legacy of Love
07/01/2010

Engelbert Humperdinck's latest album Legacy of Love has the singer reflecting on a stellar 44-year career.

Beavis and Butt-Head even recorded platinum-selling single Lesbian Seagull with him.

But Engelbert Humperdinck will forever be known for his version of the mega-hit ballad Release Me.

'I've recorded so many albums in my life, but because it was my signature and because it was my first song and because it went to number one around the world and gave me a global career immediately - thank god - that's the only song they sing in my face at airports,' Humperdinck tells AAP in Sydney, before launching into a brief rendition.

'It just goes to show the power of one song.

'I deem it a great honour.'

Humperdinck's first release in 1967 went to number one in 11 countries.

It heralded the beginning of a lengthy and successful career, spanning 44 years and racking up 150 million albums worldwide.

Many of his favourite hits - including Release Me - and two previously unrecorded singles Over the Rainbow and My Way appear on his album Legacy of Love, with which Humperdinck is touring.

'It's just a lucky stroke in my life that people around the world love my music,' the 74-year-old says.

But don't be fooled by the title, Legacy of Love is not a swan song.

'It's not the end of my career,' he is quick to add.

'But what have I got except my legacy of music?'

Humperdinck is charming, surprisingly funny and ever youthful-looking - although he is quick to add he doesn't even use face creams, much less has had any work done.

'(Unlike) in the Beverly Hills area - they're all walking around with tight faces pinned back,' he laughs.

He is also a hard worker.

So reluctant is he to slow down, that in the next few months, Humperdinck intends to return to the studio with Australian producer Paul Wiltshire to record his next album, which will include his current single Tell Me Where It Hurts.

But despite his phenomenal worldwide success, Humperdinck is still worried that a recent hair colour change might throw a few people off.
'(I'm back in Australia) letting fans see what I look like again,' the newly blonde singer says.

'When I was 20 I used to dye my hair black because I was prematurely grey.

'I'm trying to get back to my roots,' he laughs.

It's not the first time he has changed his hair style.

The long sideburns he has sported for much of his career were so popular Elvis copied them.

'The great Elvis was one of my friends - he recorded some of my songs, I recorded some of his songs, he stole my sideburns,' Humperdinck deadpans.

The King was not the only one to imitate Humperdinck.

'There are more Engelbert impersonators in Manila than anywhere in the world,' he says, adding it is impossible to get around the city.

'You can't walk anywhere.

'I've seen a few of them. They're pretty good,' he adds.

Touring in countries where people don't speak English always amazes Humperdinck.
'I just came back from South-East Asia - I'm going to countries that don't speak my language, and yet they all sing my songs for the show - how does that happen?'
But the songs do translate and the reviews have all been 'incredible', he says.

Humperdinck's Legacy of Love tour will hit Australian shores for seven dates in November.

It will be the third time in a year the singer has visited our shores for professional reasons - after performing at Carols in the Domain in December.

'But I do make visits without any hullabaloo,' he says, adding his son lives here with his family and he does slip into the country unannounced when he can.

'It's one of my favourite places in the world and the people do appreciate my music and I like that very much,' he says.

He may be taking it easier where he can - he is having a new recording studio installed in his Beverly Hills home so he can make music whenever he feels like it - but don't think Humperdinck will be slowing down any time soon.

'I love the challenge, you see,' he says.

'If my car breaks down on the road, I don't wait for somebody to come and repair it - I like the challenge. I sell the car.'
